honey beer bread

I'm always bookmarking recipes like this, but the ones that are put under my belt to be made over and over are the simple ones that contain few and inexpensive ingredients. It seems as time passes, I get busier (and poorer!), so simple and straight-forward is what I'm consistently looking for.

The recipe for honey beer bread is just that.  Mix, bake and done. Out pops warm, dense bread with a very subtle hint of sweetness. And no trace of beer taste.

Honey Beer Bread (adapted from Gimme Some Oven)

(makes 1 loaf)

2 cups white flour
1 cup whole-wheat flour
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. honey (I was a little more generous with this)
12 oz. or 1 bottle of beer

4 tbsp. butter, melted

Grease 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.
In a medium bowl, mix together dry ingredients.
Add beer and honey. Mix.
Pour half of the melted butter into the loaf pan.
Pour in the batter.
Pour the rest of the butter on top of the butter, coating it as evenly as possible.
Bake for 50-60 minutes, until top is golden brown.

I love the look of a fresh loaf. The lumpy, imperfect golden crust. The soft swirls of steam rising and filling the air with the smell of fresh bread.

Fun fact: Did you know that bread is the most consumed food in the world?
