pleasant reading

This is what I'm currently reading:

And then I noticed it. My taste in reading material. Can you notice a common theme among a few favorite reads?

Yes. I have a bit of a thing for food books, both fiction and nonfiction. It's phrases like the ones below that appeal and speak to me like no other:

"She turned her head, and her eyes met Pedro's. It was then she understood how dough feels when it is plunged into boiling oil. The heat that invaded her body was so real she was afraid she would start to bubble -- her face, her stomach, her heart, her breasts-- like batter" - Like Water For Chocolate

"On a recent Saturday morning, my friend Judith and I shopped for breakfast at the Greenpoint farmers' market. We bought eggs, butter, cheese, fresh bread, and plenty of apples--the makings of a princely meal--and I chattered enthusiastically about the apple French toast and scrambled eggs with cheese that we could whip up" - In the Kitchen With a Good Appetite

"You are what you eat eats - In Defense of Food

"The fish should be so fresh, it's practically still breathing, grilled over smoldering embers. An open fire, though more poetic, would just kill the delicate flavor. The only seasoning needed is salt, and perhaps a little bit of olive oil. the best way to attack a plate of roasted turbot is with your hands. Your fingers will be glued together by the gelatin in the fish flesh by the end, but you only need to lick them to release them clean again" - The Foodie Handbook

That last quote is my favorite. Bliss. And it reminds me that turbot is on my list of things to try.

So what are your favorite types of books to read?

i really want to read the man who ate everything (and i want to give it to my boyfriend, who used to be so picky before we met and while i've expanded his palate, it's got a ways to go). i also really want to read in defense of food. ugh. i need to get on this!

Oh you need to read In Defense, for sure. I found it highly informative and so interesting. Initially, it read a bit textbooky to me, but it got easier quickly.

My bf is a picky eater too! I'm slowly but surely getting him into more seafood. He's been a bit more adventurous lately. I give that credit to me, haha.

I love reading food books too! Sometimes I get concerned when I realize I spend half my time cooking, and then the other half reading food books or magazines or blogs. I have to check out some of these food books you've listed!

another great food quote is from Paulo Coelho's Witch of Portabello

"we cook and complain that it's a waste of time, we should be pouring our love into making that food. Our time on earth is sacred and we should celebrate every moment"

I love reading for just this reason - finding something that is so relevant.

hahaha! This is great.

I tend to read books on philosophy, movements and spirituality. But I like to keep it open...I can ALWAYS appreciate a book that is simply written well.

I gravitate towards non-fiction - and I love food books too (especially if there are great pictures).

I don't think I've ever read a food book...my favorite type of book is 'dystopias'. I love a good dystopia: The Giver, Brave New World, A Handmaid's Tale, etc.
